You’ll have to experiment a lot with this when learning to make gifs. The number depends on the length on your clip. I recommend limiting your gif from between 2-6 frames. However, this increases the amount of frames in your gif, which increases the file size by a lot. The default setting should limit your gif to every 2 frames. In the above picture, note my settings in the red box. If you’re not making a gif for Tumblr, then you won’t have to be so frugal with your gif ) But since I’m making this tutorial with Tumblr in mind, being frugal with your gif is important as it’s extremely easy to go over the file size limit. Getting a gif under the size limit is the most annoying part of making a gif if you’re making it for Tumblr. If you’re making gifs for Tumblr, it is extremely important to know that there is a 1mb file size limit per gif for Tumblr. You’ll want to click 'selected range only’ as this allows you to select exactly which part of the clip you want to import. Make sure the 'frame animation’ box is checked. You can import the entire clip beginning to end, but I do not recommend this, especially if it’s a large clip. This box should appear, with your video in the screen. Go to the location on your computer where you have your video clip and open that clip. In the upper left-hand corner, click File and go down to Import. Now you’ll want to load your clip into Photoshop. This will contain the individual frames of the clip that you want to turn into a gif. You should see a long horizontal ‘animation (frames)’ box like the one at the bottom of the above picture. When you have a video clip, open Photoshop. Or when splitting a movie/TV file, don’t output in.

avi files, but CS5 almost always has problems reading them, so when taking videos off of YouTube, don’t convert to. Photoshop CS5 says it supports these files.

Some clips you can get off of YouTube by using OnlineVideoConverter, or if you have a movie or TV episode in full and want a clip from that, I recommend using this video splitter, if you don’t already have one. I use both of these methods for getting clips. It seems like more of a hassle and I can never get these to turn out decent.

I do not know how to make a gif using screenshots. Other people use screenshots to make their gifs. To begin, you’ll need a video clip that contains the scene you want to make a gif on. I, myself, am learning all the time on how to improve the quality of my gifs with experimenting and other tutorials. I’ve only been doing this for a few months. I’ll try to be as in-depth as possible, because I know when I was learning how to make gifs, I hated the tutorials that were really vague.ĭisclaimer: I am not an expert on gifs. Like sharpening frames to make your gifs look crisper, lighten gifs that are darker, make your gif look more “vibrant”, add text, and all that. I might make another tutorial soon on how to do more stuff with a gif if you get the hang of the basics and want to improve how your gifs look. Now, like I said, this is a basic tutorial. I wanted to be as in-depth as possible! So fair warning, it’s a lengthy (and hopefully helpful) tutorial! I made this with beginners in mind and for those who know next to nothing about gif-making. So if you have any questions on something or want something to be explained more in-depth, please ask!ĭisclaimer: This turned out a lot longer than I expected. This will be my first attempt at an in-depth tutorial on how to make a basic GIF for those who want to learn and have Photoshop :) I use Photoshop CS5 and unfortunately, I’m not familiar with any other versions. It’s a bit difficult to explain certain things with only pictures and text.
